Short answer
It depends on what you do after the shot: for speed, annotation and screen recording use the built-in tool or CleanShot X; to find old screenshots weeks later from a single word, use Shotbox. This page compares four (built-in, CleanShot X, Shottr, Shotbox) with third-party facts taken from their own sites and checked 2026-10-14; they are not mutually exclusive, and Shotbox can run alongside any of them.
How to choose
- You just need a quick shot and an occasional mark-up: the built-in tool, nothing to install.
- You need annotation, screen recording, scrolling capture and cloud sharing, sending shots straight to others: CleanShot X.
- You want something small that also does color picking and pixel measuring, and accept a pay-what-you-want price: Shottr.
- You take many screenshots, want to find an old one weeks later from a single word, and want all the text in the image handled on your Mac: Shotbox.
Four tools in one table
| Tool | Strengths | System requirement | Price | Data and network | Source (checked 2026-10-14) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in macOS | The Shift-Command-5 panel captures the full screen, a window or a selection and records the screen; the floating thumbnail lets you mark up, trim or drag the shot; shortcut captures save to the desktop as PNG | Ships with macOS | Free | System feature; whether text in a screenshot can be copied: not mentioned on that page, not verified | Apple Support: take screenshots or screen recordings |
| CleanShot X | Screenshots, scrolling capture, screen recording (MP4 / GIF), annotation, OCR to copy text, link sharing through CleanShot Cloud; searchable history of past screenshots: not verified | macOS 13.0 or later | Basic $35 one-time (includes one year of updates, then optional renewal at $19 per year); Pro $10 per user per month billed annually; also available through Setapp | Site says text recognition is on-device; cloud sharing is optional | Home page · Pricing · FAQ |
| Shottr | Small (site lists 2.4 MB), scrolling screenshots, OCR to copy text, annotation, pixel measuring and color picking, pinned shots; searchable history of past screenshots: not verified | macOS Catalina (10.15) or later, optimized for Apple silicon | Site says "name your price, or enter $0 to get Shottr for free", with periodic purchase prompts when free; exact price: not verified | Needs the internet to validate the license and checks for updates at launch; telemetry can be turned off in Preferences | Home page |
| Shotbox | After each capture it reads the text on your Mac, titles and files the shot and removes duplicates, so you can search an old shot from one word; also copy-text capture, annotation, scrolling capture and pinning | macOS 13 or later, Apple silicon and Intel (a DMG from the website, not in the App Store) | Free, no account | Reading, titling and filing all happen on the Mac and screenshots and their text never leave the device; only anonymous usage statistics (never screenshots or content) are sent, on by default and switchable off | This site's home page and privacy policy |
Third-party entries come from each tool's own home, pricing or FAQ page and are their own statements, not our tests. Prices and requirements change, so check the site on the day you buy. "Not verified" means we did not see it on an official page, not that it does not exist.
What each does well
- Built-in: zero install and zero cost, and the floating thumbnail lets you mark up or drag the shot away; for occasional use it is enough.
- CleanShot X: the most complete chain after the shot (annotation, recording, cloud sharing, scrolling capture); people who send images and recordings to others rarely need anything else.
- Shottr: light and quick, with pixel measuring, color picking and scrolling capture listed on its site, the small tools designers and front-end developers reach for.
- Shotbox: built for "I took many and cannot find them": the text in each image is indexed on your Mac the moment you shoot, so one word brings it back weeks later; free, no account, works offline.
Costs and limits
- Shotbox does not do screen recording, GIF or cloud sharing (as of 0.10.1); choose CleanShot X or the built-in tool for those.
- Shotbox is a DMG from the website, not in the App Store, and needs the Screen Recording permission the first time (every region-capture tool does).
- On-device OCR is good on clean print but makes mistakes on handwriting, decorative fonts and dense multi-column layouts; check amounts and code against the original image.

FAQ
Is there a free Mac screenshot OCR tool?
Shotbox is free and reads the text in each screenshot on your Mac so you can search it. Shottr's site says you can enter $0 and use it free, and it also copies text with OCR. CleanShot X is paid software (Basic is $35 one-time).
Is the built-in macOS screenshot tool enough?
For quick shots and the occasional mark-up, yes: the Shift-Command-5 panel captures and records, and the floating thumbnail lets you mark up. Consider a third-party tool when you need to find a screenshot from weeks ago or capture a scrolling page.
Do these screenshot tools upload what is on my screen?
It differs: Shotbox keeps screenshots and their text on the device; CleanShot X cloud sharing is optional; Shottr's site says it needs the internet to validate the license and check for updates. Check each privacy notice.
Can I install Shotbox next to CleanShot X?
Yes. They do different jobs: CleanShot X for annotation, recording and sharing, Shotbox for searching old screenshots from one word.
