Short answer
OwlOCR does one job all the way: select a screen region, recognize it on the Mac with Apple Vision and copy the result; it also handles images, PDFs and iPhone camera scans, exports searchable PDFs, and has Finder Quick Actions and a command line. Core is free forever and needs macOS 13.3 or later; Pro is $19.99 a year or $49.99 once for the current version and adds batch work, the CLI and local OCR AI. Its goal is to get the text out. Shotbox's goal is to find the screenshot again weeks later: after each capture the text goes into a library, the shot is titled and sorted, and one word brings it back. To extract text and handle PDFs pick OwlOCR; to find old screenshots pick Shotbox. Third-party facts checked 2026-10-16.
The differences at a glance
| OwlOCR | Shotbox | |
|---|---|---|
| What it mainly does | Per its site: select a screen area for OCR copied to the clipboard, multi-area capture combined; images, PDFs, iPhone camera scans; searchable PDF export; QR and barcodes; Finder Quick Actions and CLI; optional local OCR AI (Pro) | Reads the text in screenshots on your Mac, titles, sorts and de-duplicates them, so you find the original weeks later from one word; also text capture, annotation, scrolling capture and pinned images |
| Platform and requirements | macOS 13.3 or later, Apple silicon and Intel; download from the site, also on the Mac App Store | macOS 13 or later, Apple silicon and Intel (DMG from the website, not on the App Store) |
| Price | Per its site: Core free forever; Pro $19.99 a year, or $49.99 once for the current software version | Free, no account |
| Where data goes | Per its site: Apple Vision and the local OCR AI both run on the device and documents are not sent to an online AI service; the network is used only for downloads, updates and licensing | Recognition, titling and sorting all happen on the Mac; screenshots and the text in them never leave it; only anonymous usage statistics (no screenshots or content) are sent, on by default and switchable off in settings |
| After the capture (check date) | The site covers getting text out and exporting; it does not mention keeping past screenshots as a searchable library | This is the core: recognition, titling, sorting and de-duplication, found again weeks later from one word |

When to pick OwlOCR
- You want to pull text out of the screen, images or scans, and handle whole PDFs or make searchable PDFs.
- You need the command line or Finder batch processing and accept Pro's price.
- You want a second pass with a local OCR AI for hard-to-read pages.
When to pick Shotbox
- You care less about one-off extraction than about finding a screenshot again weeks later.
- You want screenshots titled, sorted and de-duplicated automatically, free and with no account.
- Your Mac is on macOS 13 and OwlOCR's 13.3 requirement may be just out of reach.
Limits of Shotbox
- Shotbox does not record the screen, make GIFs or share to the cloud.
- Shotbox is installed from a DMG on the website, not the App Store, and the first run needs Screen Recording permission (every region-capture tool does).
- On-device OCR does well on clear print; handwriting, decorative fonts and dense multi-column layouts produce errors, so check amounts and code against the original.
Three things to test yourself before you commit
- Take one page of Chinese layout and one of English and compare the typos in both OCR results; check amounts and code against the original.
- Capture 20 shots, then three weeks later search one word in Shotbox and compare that with OwlOCR's save-a-file-and-find-it flow.
- Check your macOS version: OwlOCR needs 13.3 or later.
Moving over from OwlOCR, or using both
OwlOCR and Shotbox both recognize on the Mac and do not conflict, so nothing needs migrating. OwlOCR copies results to the clipboard or exports files, while Shotbox stores the screenshot and its text in its own library. A common split is whole PDFs and batches to OwlOCR and everyday screenshots to Shotbox. If Shotbox's hotkey clashes with OwlOCR's Cmd+F1, change one in either app.
